Blocked Sewer in Chesterfield

When multiple drains in your home back up at the same time, the problem is usually in the sewer — the shared drain downstream of where your individual drains converge. We diagnose and clear blocked sewers across Chesterfield and Derbyshire, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Sewer Blockage or Drain Blockage — Telling the Difference

A single blocked drain affects only the fixture it directly serves: a blocked kitchen drain leaves the toilet and bath unaffected. A blocked sewer sits further down the system and backs up everything upstream of the blockage simultaneously.

The tell-tale signs of a sewer blockage:

  • Toilet, bath, and sink all sluggish or backing up at the same time
  • Flushing the toilet causes the bath or shower to gurgle
  • Running a washing machine causes water to appear in the toilet bowl or bath
  • Manhole covers in the garden overflowing or smelling strongly
  • Sewage surfacing at ground level near a known sewer run

None of these symptoms on their own are definitive — but two or more together, particularly simultaneous backing-up of different fixtures, points clearly to the sewer.

How We Clear a Blocked Sewer

We start at the inspection chamber closest to the blockage — usually accessible in the garden or via a manhole in a shared access. High-pressure water jetting is the primary tool: a jetting hose is fed into the sewer and the blockage is broken up and flushed through. For most FOG accumulations, wipe masses, and debris blockages, jetting clears the pipe fully in a single visit.

For root blockages in older clay sewers — common in the tree-lined Victorian streets of Brampton, Hasland, and Newbold — we use a root-cutting attachment on the jetter before flushing. This removes the root mass from the pipe. However, roots will regrow through the same cracked joints unless the pipe is relined. If root ingress is repeated or severe, a CCTV survey and relining quote is the next logical step.

When CCTV Is Needed

If jetting clears the blockage but the same section blocks again within weeks or months, there is a structural reason — a root entry point, a displaced joint creating a silt trap, or a partial collapse. A CCTV survey identifies the cause so the underlying issue can be fixed, not just repeatedly cleared.

We also use CCTV when the blockage location is unclear, or when we need to confirm whether the fault is in the private drain or the adopted sewer. This matters because if it is in Severn Trent's adopted sewer, they are responsible for the clearance and repair — not you.

Severn Trent and Shared Sewers

If the blocked sewer serves more than one property, it is most likely adopted by Severn Trent. They have a 24-hour emergency line for blockages in adopted sewers. If you are unsure whether the blocked pipe is private or adopted, call us — we can identify this quickly and point you in the right direction. We will not charge you to attend and tell you it is Severn Trent's problem.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if it's a blocked sewer rather than just a blocked drain?
The clearest sign of a sewer blockage is that multiple fixtures back up at the same time — toilet, bath, and sink all draining sluggishly or overflowing together. A single blocked drain affects only the fixture it serves. If flushing the toilet causes the bath to gurgle, or running the kitchen tap backs up into the sink while the toilet is also slow, the blockage is downstream of where those drains converge — which means the sewer.
Is a blocked sewer an emergency?
It depends on the severity. If sewage is surfacing — in a garden, a yard, or inside the property — treat it as an emergency and call us immediately. We cover Chesterfield 24/7. If drainage is very slow but not yet overflowing, it needs clearing the same day — slow sewer blockages deteriorate quickly, especially if the property has multiple occupants.
The blocked sewer runs behind several houses — is it Severn Trent's responsibility?
Quite possibly, yes. If the sewer carries flow from more than one property, it is almost certainly adopted by Severn Trent following the 2011 transfer of private shared sewers. Severn Trent are then responsible for clearing and repairing it. However, if you are not sure which pipe is blocked or where the responsibility boundary falls, call us — we can identify the problem quickly and direct you to Severn Trent if the fault is their responsibility.
What causes a sewer to block?
The most common causes are accumulated fat, oil, and grease (FOG) from kitchens — sometimes called a fatberg — combined with wipes, sanitary products, and other non-dispersible material that people flush. In older clay sewers, root ingress through cracked joints adds a physical obstruction. Tree roots are a particular issue in Chesterfield's Victorian streets where mature trees line the roads above shared back-lane sewers.
